Solazyme, Inc., the leading industrial biotechnology company producing renewable oil and bioproducts from microalgae, announced that Sir Richard Branson has invested in Solazyme's Series D financing.
Sir Richard has invested in Solazyme's financing in a personal capacity. The stake complements existing Virgin Group investments through the Virgin Green Fund in the renewable energy and resource efficiency sectors.
"Sustainable renewable oils and biofuels will play an important role in our future," said Sir Richard. "We have made a number of investments in these emerging fields over the last four years and I'm excited about Solazyme's potential to make oils for fuels, chemicals and foods at scale."
Jonathan Wolfson, CEO of Solazyme, also commented on the new relationship. "Sir Richard Branson is clearly a recognized thought leader in sustainable solutions and the fight to reduce carbon pollution. We are honored to have him join Solazyme as an investor."
